Organic Yemen starts exporting cosmetic oils to Asia

Organic Yemen (OY) is now exporting cosmetic oils and superfoods to Asia. This makes it one of a few Yemeni companies exporting goods during this difficult time. The feat demonstrates OY’s trusted international brand, diverse marketing infrastructure, and trade mastery of the Asian market.

Early this July 2021, OY exported hundreds of kilograms of Yemen-grown jojoba and moringa oils to Thailand. It will be exporting more to Malaysia starting July, and thereafter, to other Southeast Asian countries.

Why exporting cosmetic oils to Asia?

Local partners in target countries will distribute the company’s prepackaged oils via E-commerce channels. This is to exploit the strong growth of E-commerce and new digital sales channels in Asia.

Indeed, research shows Southeast Asian countries having some of the highest E-commerce adoption levels globally. Thailand and Malaysia have since 2019 shown some of the strongest E-commerce growth, and therefore become OY’s first target markets for its newly developed high-end retail brand, Yuri&Terra.

The fast-growing Southeast Asian market: OY's focus

Organic Yemen focuses on Southeast Asia as a strategic market for Yemen agricultural exports. The region’s countries show some of the most promising market research statistics. In 2020, according to iStrata:

  • Southeast Asia registered US$25.449 billion in revenue in Beauty and Cosmetics.

  • In Malaysia, revenue for cosmetics amounted to US$366.2m

  • In Thailand, revenue for cosmetics amounted to US$763.4m.

  • The region’s superfoods market will register a CAGR of 8.6% (2020-2026) period.

  • The region’s E-commerce market is also booming, with Datareportal predicting double-digit growth to continue.

  • Malaysia’s government has made growing its online economy a national priority.

Organic Yemen is looking to exploit the booming cosmetics and superfoods market in Southeast Asia, starting with Thailand and Malaysia.

  • Early this July, OY exported 300kg of Yemen moringa and jojoba oils to local marketing partners in Thailand.

  • Starting August, OY is aiming to export more moringa and jojoba products to local marketing partners in Malaysia and Indonesia.

  • OY is taking advantage of the packaging, marketing and E-Commerce abilities of local partners to gain the highest profit for its investors, with the smallest expense.

  • The Southeast Asian market was specifically chosen due to the booming growth in categories served by Organic Yemen, as outlined below:

beyond cosmetic oils

Accordingly, OY’s marketing strategy is:

  • To begin selling pure essential oils under its high-end Yuri&Terra brand in Thailand.

  • Progressively expand sales to Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and UAE.

  • Broaden the product line to include moringa powder, moringa tea and Sidr honey.

  • Follow that up by selling oil blends, insect repellents, shampoo, and conditioners.

OY has meanwhile applied for trademark protection for Yuri&Terra (Y&T) in Thailand and Malaysia. This follows the successful acquisition of the Trademark in UAE in May. The trademark will protect OY’s brand, fight counterfeits, and boost the overall international quality rating of Yemen's export products.

Overcoming obstacles to export cosmetics and superfood products

At present, Yemen is overwhelmingly a net importer, including over 90% of its food. Conversely, the country is hardly exporting any products to international markets. Security challenges, logistical difficulties, port congestion and onerous documentation and security requirements are all big hurdles to exporting from Yemen.

  • The security situation is affecting Yemen exports, particularly liquid products like oils, because of fears that liquids and powders could pose threats to aircraft.

  • There are few, sometimes no logistics options for air and sea freight. When available, regulations can change frequently, requiring repackaging or starting the documentation process all over.

  • Much bureaucracy delays the export process. For example, Yemen and Thai governments require reams of commercial and health documentation, all which must be painstakingly cross checked and confirmed.

Despite the difficulties, OY has built formidable marketing and sales infrastructure within Yemen and in Malaysia and Thailand. The company’s Sales Manager, Mr. Naef Mohammed, has made use of his vast experience and marketing connections to navigate all sales, shipping and marketing obstacles

OY aims to be the major exporter of high-quality beauty and superfood products with a global appeal. The company’s expertise and growing international stature are popularizing Yemen agriculture products around the world.
